Here's a long snowshoe in winter - 7 miles round trip and 800 feet elevation gain. The lookout is rented in the winter, so be sure no one is there if you climb up the stairs to take advantage of the additional height.
Forested Summit
Mill Creek Ridge, OR | July 2018
Taking Gooseneck Rd off of Highway 22. Same approach as nearby Dorn Peak W7O/CC-013 http://www.pnwsota.org/blog/ki7emx/2017-december-10/dorn-peak-oregon
Once you leave pavement on to gravel, follow road for 2.4 miles. You will come to an 3 way intersection at 44°59'16.96"N 123°30'32.75"W (44.988044° -123.509097°). Turn left here. If you are going to Dorn Peak take the right - it will take you all the way to the summit.
W7O/CE-278, 5580 - 1701m, 4 Points 1st Activation November 2018
"5580" is a four-point summit approximately 25 miles northeast of Prineville, OR. It is fairly easy to reach by roads with a short pack to the summit. The summit was activated for the 1st time on 24-Nov-2018 by Roland - K7FOP and myself Shelby -N7SHG.
Badger Butte, OR | July 2017
UPDATE Dec 2021 - Badger Butte (and other summits in the area) are not accessible from Dec 1 to April 1 due to closure of NF-48 and other routes to vehicles more than 50 inches wide. SO - if there's snow and you've got a snowmobile, have at it. See the photo below.
Wildcat Mountain, OR | July 2017
Here's a nice 2.4 mile round trip hike on a quiet forest road, east of Prineville. Don't get this Wildcat Mountain mixed up with the other three summits with the same name in Oregon.
Humbug Mountain, South Coast OR | Nov 2018
Humbug is a great hike on the South Coast, even if it is a steep six miles round trip and 1700 feet of gain. Find the well-marked and large parking lot for the trailhead about five miles south of Port Orford, Oregon on the west side of Highway 101. No parking pass is required.
After you climb about a mile, there is a slightly shorter (and slightly steeper) option to take the West Trail - I suggest that you try both, as the West has some nice peak-a-boo views, and the East has some amazing old growth. All trails are well-graded and likely busy during the summer months.
Divide Butte, OR | October 2018
Easy driving access in a somewhat remote part of the Mt Hood National Forest. Best way in is to enter the forest from Hillock Burn Road off Highway 211 which turns into the 45 road. You follow that for about 13 miles to the turnoff to the 4540 road. It's notable as you go from gravel to pavement when you turn off from the main road to a secondary road. the 4540 meanders it's way up past a sometimes-there lake, taking a left turn there and is fairly overgrown but still passable. In about 3.5 miles, you pass the turn off to South Fork Mountain, an easy drive up summit.
Dow Mountain, WA | Sep 2018
See my trip reports for 2 other summits in this area: Saddle Mtn. and Duplex Summit.
There are two ways to get up to Dow Mountain - a long drive on gravel roads, or a forest road walk of around 2.5 miles (1900' elevation gain). Since I was also visiting two other summits along the way, I opted for the road approaching from the north. The road going up to Dow Mtn. from Hoodsport is gated - this is the road to take if you wish to hike it.
Veda Butte, OR | July 2017
This is a short one mile hike 400 feet of gain that you reach by driving about five miles on a poor road. There's some bushwacking required to make the Activation Zone.
Rogers Peak, OR | August 2018
Rogers Peak is the highest point in Tillamook County and the highest also in W7O/NC. It's fairly easy to access, given a good road that is fine for passenger cars, a road walk after a gate, and a final ascent using an overgrown cat track that leads you almost directly to the summit.
