Peak 4816 is a near drive-up summit a bit east of Mount Hood, accessed mostly on paved Forest Service roads. The summit area has an small but interesting rock pinnacle. You should consider this summit in the Mount Hood 2m FM "dead zone" as we were not able to raise anyone on 146.52 except a sked with a nearby S2S. Also, APRS and cell service were marginal or non-existent, so that spotting our activations on HF were a real problem.
This is a summit that you'll want a good GPS and map for, as the directions below should only be considered approximate. We followed turn-by-turn directions from three different devices that seemed to agree most of the time. There are other ways to get to this summit as there are a maze of roads in this area - these directions are reasonably straightforward.
From Highway 26, take paved Oregon Skyline Road (NF-42) past the snow park areas, and then after 1.1 miles, turn right and go 2.5 miles. Then go left and take NF-2660 for just under a mile and turn onto paved NF-58 (or Abbott Road) and continue about 9.25 miles. Take a very sharp left turn here where the road turns to gravel, and go 0.6 miles, then left again for 0.5 miles.This is Road 724 and is decent gravel until the last two miles.
The last (approximately) two miles are on a rough, narrow track that could probably be driven in a carefully piloted passenger car - one you didn't care much about the paint. You'll find a decent parking area here and a track leading off to the left that shouldn't be driven. This final road of about 1/10 mile will take you to a large open area with a small rock pinnacle. Although it's not the actual summit (according to provided coordinates) it is in the AZ and a fun place to activate.
