People who wish to receive the PNW SOTA Newsletter
Ham since 1965. Mainly DX And contesting.
2 Meter station. I can hear from Oregon to NW Washington.
I a fairly new ham operator and got my technician class in December of last year. I just recently upgraded to general a couple weeks ago and looking forward to trying it the hf bands. I enjoy the outdoors and looking forward to trying out some sota activations. I do a lot of driving in the week so free time for ham radio is on the weekend.
So far I have only been a chaser but I want to start activating. I currently have some 5watt HTs with a roll up antenna buti recently picked up a qrp hf radio and I have some portable antennas.
I've always enjoyed being outdoors and this program gives me yet another excuse to get myself out there! I'm looking forward to challenging myself and roam all over the PNW chasing SOTA points.
I'll likely be doing more activating than chasing. Right now I've got an IC-718 as my only HF radio, so going for SSB contacts is a weighty affair when the battery is brought into the mix. I've gotten a QCX-mini kit that I'll have build before the end of the month and we'll see if I can figure out enough CW to make that worth it! At the very least, 2022 should be a very productive year for me.
New to the hobby. Looking forward to making contacts!
New to SOTA in 2021. Looking forward to making many contacts. Will mostly be running QRP.
62 years old, Ham Radio since 1980, interest on DX, DXpeditions, VHF, UHF. Other Calls PP5XX, PT9ZZ, PQ8XX, PY5XX, PYØFM, 3D2XX.
To work summits around the world.
I like to hike, to climb, and to design and build various electronic projects, particularly vintage-like computer systems (8 and 16-bit, 8080/Z80/8085/8086/8088 based). See my website for some of these projects
No activities so far, but interested in participating in SOTA
I think of myself as an athletic person persuing the balance between body, soul and intelect.
I like to hike/climb, and keen to have light weight gear. When I operate I prefer to activate and chase. My first activation VE7/SL-126 has a number of first's attached to it. My first Sota summit, first Sota S2S, and, many years ago, my first winter ski descent. There are a few summits in the area that I am planning to activate, especially if I can find others who are interested. My 144Mhz gear: Kenwood TH-D7 and an Arrow VHF/UHF Satellite Beam. In addition, where possible, I like to use APRS to post my operational status. My APRS gear, an Ailunce HD1, mobilinkd TNC3, a cell phone, and a TV Twin Lead j-Pole. The Ailunce is a backup to the Kenwood.
New Ham as of June 2021. Love the outdoors. SOTA brings them together in a way that is awesome!
Interested in Activating and Chasing. Currently have an Handheld FT-60.
Amateur General. Enjoy SOTA/POTA. Starting to activate using CW.
Most activations have been 2m FM, but I do take my FT818 when I will have an extended period in which to activate. Starting to do CW activations.
Licensed Operator since 2013 and started operating QRP portable in 2014. Started my bushcrafting and hiking career on family hikes from an early age and later in high school and college would go with my buddies into the Serrias for week-long hikes. I also would spend Summers and Winters in Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado with my mother's family and ski, snowshoe, and hike in the Sangre de Christo mountains and the Rockies as well. The only thing that matches my love of our beautiful wildlands is my love for Amateur Radio... it seems that SOTA is a perfect fit and I live for the new adventures that the PNW has to offer. I'm also a licensed Commercial Pilot and watercolor artist.
I like to challenge myself and really like the adventure of an overnight hike to a summit. Although I'm not a Mountaineer, I will spend 2 - 3 days on the trail to get to an unactivated summit and enjoy the solitude of a remote location and the satisfaction of activating an unactivated summit. I don't re-visit summits. It's not about the points for me. It's about the journey and setting personal objectives. I've always used a PackTenna random wire for HF and my favorite VHF/UHF antenna is the 450 ohm SlimJim roll-up by N4TAX - awesome antenna! I will rarely use the Elk LOg Periodic if I'm up to lugging it around but I try to keep my pack light and my gear simple. My transciever is the venerable FT-817. I don't know of a portable radio with a better receive on it. QRP only - no amps. Modes = SSB/CW

My first summit activation on 6/12/2021 was W7W/LC-103 Larch Mountain, WA during the ARRL June VHF contest. I was on 2m, 70cm & 23cm bands. I enjoyed the S2S contact with K7AHR and K7ATN.

FT-817ND
Wannabe activator. Tried unsuccessfully to activate 5379 Intermediate Frequency Peak last fall. Just picked up an FT-817ND and looking forward to getting back out and trying again.
New to SOTA, learning as I go
Mostly into activating, as I don't have a home station. But perhaps I will get something set up so I can chase as well.
Central Oregon outdoorsman. Grew up around ham radio through my uncle Dan, K7SS and grandfather Charlie, KA7NGA (silent key). Picked up my General license in May and really just getting started. I work in the maritime industry on ocean going tugboats so am often calling maritime mobile. I spend most of my off time seeking adventures in nature so I see some SOTA activations in my near future.
None yet. I have an icom ic-7000 and a backpack. Not the ideal rig but I'll be shopping for a better qrp setup. Interested in any advice.
I am an engineer that designs bodies and equipment for trucks and a new Ham.
I am interested in participating in SOTA activations with my kids. May not get many hikes in now, but when they get older, I would like to start making summits and contacts while sharing special memories with my kids in the outdoors.
