1820 is a relatively easily accessible forested summit in the Oregon Central Coast (CC) region near Lincoln City, OR. It sits entirely on Siuslaw National Forest land. 1820 was a First Activation for the crew, which consisted of Amy KC7JNU, Katherine KK7IUD, KC K1ZMA, Jason K7BXX and myself.
From Lincoln City, proceed south on Hwy 101 for 4.5 miles to the junction of Hwy 229 (44.90180, -124.00721). Proceed 5.7 miles on Hwy 229 along the Siletz river to the start of FR 1956 (44.87436, -123.91670). Proceed uphill, keeping right onto FR 1980 in 2.4 miles (44.88119, -123.88487). Proceed another 1.7 miles, remaining on FR 1980 until you reach the intersection point of 1980 and the ridge up to Peak 1820. There is room for a couple of cars to park at 44.88021, -123.85738.
Note that some maps also show a spur road to the summit from the north (FR 1958 / 1958-111). This route is NOT recommended due to deep thorny overgrowth along the spur, having been decommissioned many years ago. The ridge route described below is preferred.
From the parking spot on 1980, you will find remnants of a user trail up the ridge. Proceed uphill 0.2 miles and 200 vertical feet to a relatively flat summit. There are trees and ample space for just about any SOTA antenna.
VHF in this part of the coast range is sparse, so we recommend HF for a full activation with points (1).
