McCulloch Peak is another great peak to actiavte if you are in the Corvallis area. It is reached by taking OR Hwy 99W north from Corvallis and turning left about 3 miles from town on Lewisburg Rd. Take Lewisburg road 1.3 miles and bear right onto Sulfur Springs Road. Proceed to the top of Lewisburg Saddle and head back down the hill. Near the bottom of the hill, which is Soap Creek valley, the road will take a 180 degree right turn. This point is 3.9 miles from Hwy99. Stay straight turning onto the gravel road. Follow the gravel road 0.6 miles unitl it ends at the 700 gate. The gate is 4.5 miles from Hwy 99W.
Begin walking up the 700 road into McDonald Research Forest. About 0.85 miles up the road, go left at the sign to McCulloch peak (2.4mi) staying on road 700. Ascend steeply at times until reaching another interection at about 2.45 miles with the 680 road. Stay right on the 700 road following the signs to McCulloch peak.
Continue on the 700 road reaching the top of a ridge at about 2.75 miles up the trail. Go left, on the 790 road, following the signs to the peak. I measured 3.2 miles to the peak from the 700 gate.
The summit has a small bench and a little clearing to the south/southeast. Not that much of a view. There are plenty of large trees for dipoles and a few scrub trees for EFHW poles. This is a popular area with hikers/runners/bikers so be prepared. Its a great hike with about 1600 vertical feet of gain in 3 miles so its a good workout to boot! Great first activation peak.
