Mountain Biker with a HAM problem. Or is that a HAM with a mountain biking problem.

Got into SOTA in summer of 2022 after getting my general ticket. SOTA via MTB is what interests me the most. Started my journey into learning CW back in December 2022 and looking to do my first on air QSO in Spring 2023. My job has me travel ocasionally and I particurly enjoy when it takes me to the PNW.

Electrical Engineer at UW Applied Physics Lab. I’ve been a ham since the late 90s, but as a kid I loved SWLing. I’m interested in combining backcountry camping, biking, and motorcycle ADV riding with POTA and SOTA activations.

IC-705 or Pentek TR-35 when size or weight dictates.

Been climbing mountains and/or been tramping about the outdoors literally since my parents hauled us about in kid-carrying backpacks (Papoose) so pretty much my entire life. Don't do as many glaciated peaks as I once did, the years will do that, but I still get out there. Do a bit of Hot Spring hunting as well.

Anyway I thought it would be a cool idea to take a Radio with me up some of these peaks, come to find out that's already a 'thing!' So here I am! :-)

I design and oversee testing of Railway Signaling systems across the globe in my professional life.

Well, I don't have any stories to tell quite yet as I am newbie to SOTA, but I finally decided to go out and drag a radio to the top of a peak or two, and as such just picked up an IC-705 for that purpose! So, stay tuned and I will update this after I climb some peaks! :-)

I am a retired engineer with a love of the outdoors

I am a SOTA newbie living in north central Idaho with several SOTA and POTA sites accessible as day trips. I have a K3 and am investigating portable FT8 equipment (e.g. QDX) for light weight activations.

I am a retired physician (pathologist) and have been a ham for 25+ years. I was the advisor for the University of North Dakota Student Amateur Radio Association for 10 years.

I enjoy the outdoors and mountains of Montana to New Mexico. Now that I am retired I hope to start doing those activities I have only read about!

I was a tech from 2024 to 2021. A few years ago my life was turned upside down due to an injury in my brain. No longer able to work or do many of the activities I did before, I came back to ham radio to fill my time. I was enjoying what I could from the hobby as a tech. Due the injury, studying for my general was very slow. I want to learn more about SOTA in our area.

Update May 2021 - I recently set a goal to study for my general exam. Many days, I could only study for 1/2 hr each day. I spent a couple months slowly going through the exam questions and learning as much as I could absorb. One day in March of 2021, I began taking practice tests. Some days I could not study or take the tests. But I pushed through. Steadily, my practice test scores began to climb. Each day, I focused on the tests only. Taking breaks in between. Taking naps to rest my brain. I continued to push through. March 17th I woke up in the morning and took a practice test. I was feeling somewhat confident, but studying and taking practice tests were hurting my brain. So I felt it I needed to put my energy into the real test. I scheduled an online exam for the following day. I practiced a bit in the morning and rested as much as I could leading up to the test. I took the real test and got all questions correct. None of my practice tests did I get all questions right. It was a very emotional moment for me. What might be easy for some, was much more challenging for me.

Getting my general ticket has now opened many more doors for me to enjoy the hobby with the limited physical and mental abilities I now have.

My areas of interest are

Continue using Winkeyer and CW Decoder software to communicate with other CW Ops.

SOTA - I have learned there are many drive up (close) summits. I began chasing and activating.

POTA - I love getting out of the house and using my gear in parks.

Checking in on local and wide area nets

Contesting is not something my brain can handle, but I will throw my call into the hat and hopefully help some others.

I would love to do as many drive-up activations as I can. I can no longer hike :( , but I see there are sites that I can reach via vehicle.

Sea to Summit, thats me!

Hanging around more on summits, especialy those w/ views.
Currently using a Wouxun HT @ 5W or a TYT @ 10W w/ one of Ed Fong's roll-up J-pole antennas.
I'm hoping to promote activations using local ham repeaters.
I have an APRS ap that might help as well.
Building a five element Yagi for better range.

Former electrical engineer now retired. I live in Battleground Washington which is about 30 minutes north of Portland Oregon. I love backpacking and ham radio so SOTA is perfect for me.

No activities yet ~ just starting out. Would like to do the actual hiking with other hikers as well as making contacts with hikers from home.
