Sonyok Mountain is on Tribal Indian land and a use permit is needed to go there. I bought mine at the Mangy Moose in Plains but they are available in most sporting goods outlets. The summit has a working lookout but had not been opened for the season when I was there.
Getting there: In Perma, Montana drive north across the bridge then immediately turn right on Race Horse Gulch Road, a well maintained Forest Service style road. In 7.8 miles, take the fork to the right. 1.4 miles later you will encounter another fork in the road. Take the right fork. soon after you will enter a clearing where three paths lay in front of you. Take the right fork. Here the road gets steeper and a little rocky. Four wheel or high clearance recommended. You will come to a closed gate. Park here. The hike is about 500 feet to the lookout.
I had a beautiful day and got good reception on both 20 and 40 meters. I tagged 6 contacts and could have stayed longer but I was trying for two SOTA's that day and had to rush off to the second one. Unfortunately that one did not pan out. Should have stayed here. Didn't encounter any other vehicles or people. Very remote.
