This is a pleasant, short hike that is clear of snow early in the spring.  The approach is on a dirt road that while suitable for most cars, may be impassible when snowy or muddy.

Exit Highway 287 on the south side of the bridge near Toston (at the Bunkhouse Bar), and head west on the paved road towards Radersburg.  Turn left (south) onto a gravel road at the transfer station / dump just before reaching Radersburg.  This road will wind south, and begin to head westerly up Johnny Gulch.  Follow the road south, and then west, and finally north as it winds into the hills.  Park in the meadow on the right (east) side of the road at 46.2032N and 111.7612W.  Frenchman Hill may be climbed directly, or one can alternatively follow the old jeep trail (signed “no motorized use”) up through pleasant meadows to the north saddle of Frenchman Hill, then proceed south to the summit.  In either case, the ascent up Frenchman Hill is a moderate grade through mixed Douglas fir and juniper, with an understory of kinnikinnick and unobtrusive shin high juniper shrubs.   The slope leads upwards to a false summit - the true summit is approximately 200-300 yards further southwest.  The generally open summit is rocky with sagebrush and juniper, and offers nice views in all directions.
