Overview:

On a glorious day filled with exceptional weather and remarkable views, I embarked on a SOTA activation of Mount Erie (W7W/SK-169). This report chronicles my journey, equipment used, band conditions encountered, and memorable experiences during the activation.

Weather and Wildlife Encounters:

The weather on the day of the activation was nothing short of spectacular, with clear skies and mild temperatures enhancing the overall experience. As I ascended the summit, I was treated to breathtaking vistas and the sight of majestic Bald Eagles, gracefully soaring and playing in the thermal upwelling along the cliffside. These encounters with nature added a unique charm to the day's adventure.

Access to Summit:

Access to Mount Erie's summit offers both hiking and driving options, with a short walk from the parking area leading to the top. For this activation, I opted for the hiking route, relishing in the opportunity to immerse myself fully in the natural beauty of the surroundings.

Equipment Used:

  • Transceiver: Elecraft KX2
  • Antenna: AX1
  • Power Output: 5 watts

Band Conditions and Contacts:

Band conditions during the activation were exceptional, with clear signals and minimal interference observed. This favorable environment facilitated smooth communication, allowing me to make contacts as far away as Oklahoma, including a memorable exchange with Gary (W5ODS).

Activation Details:

Deploying my Elecraft KX2 combined with the AX1 antenna, I operated at a power output of 5 watts, maximizing efficiency while maintaining portability. Despite the modest power, the combination proved to be highly effective, enabling me to establish meaningful contacts with my fellow SOTA enthusiasts.

Memorable Moments:

As I made my way through the activation, the panoramic views from Mount Erie's summit served as a constant reminder of the beauty and majesty of the Pacific Northwest. The sight of Bald Eagles soaring overhead added an extra layer of excitement to the experience, further enhancing the joy of amateur radio operation amidst such breathtaking surroundings.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, the SOTA activation of Mount Erie (W7W/SK-169) was an unforgettable journey filled with awe-inspiring scenery, exceptional weather, and memorable radio contacts. From the stunning views to the close encounters with wildlife, every moment of the activation was a testament to the beauty and diversity of the great outdoors.

As I descended from the summit, I carried with me not only cherished memories but also a renewed appreciation for the QRP power of amateur radio to connect individuals across vast distances. With each contact made and each summit conquered, I am reminded of the boundless possibilities that await those who dare to explore, both on the airwaves and in the world beyond.
