Sand Ridge was the first of 3 I did while doing a quick spontaneous one night camping trip to Wood River at Jackson F Kimball State Park. After setting up camp, we went to scout it for the next day but were able to get close enough I decided to hike up and activate it that evening.
From JFK State Park, we drove north on Sun Mountain Rd. A few miles up, turn left 42.78287, -121.9848. Soon take a right up towards the ridge. We parked at 42.799, -121.99137 but it was a bit rough getting that far and difficult turn around, you might want to park lower around 42.79597, -121.9891. The last coordinate there is also a road that says closed on my map but I wondered if it is an access road from RD 2303, not sure.
From where we were parked it was just over a half mile up. At the start there are a lot of fallen trees to get through, but it clears up. Easy set up on summit with lots of brush on top. I didn't go past the brushy area to the true summit. Lots of tall timber so just window views of Mt Scott, Klamath Marsh and the Basin.
I recommend doing Maklaks Crater same day.
